King & Spalding LLP in Who's Who Legal: Texas

The firm opened its Houston office in 1995 at the request of a major client. Since then, the office has grown from three to more than 100 lawyers serving dozens of clients in litigation and transactional matters, and claims to be the largest non-home-grown law firm in the state. Key Houston clients include Chevron, Dow Chemical, Halliburton, the Houston Astros and Shell Oil.

As the pie chart below clearly demonstrates, the firm is particularly strong in the area of oil & gas. The Houston office provides legal counsel on more than 10 LNG terminals in countries all over the world, and has four partners listed in the chapter. The "very bright and well thought of" Kenneth Culotta performed well in the research, as did Jose Valera and Daniel Rogers, who also appears in the Project Finance chapter as a leader in that field. The "first class" Doak Bishop is the fourth featured individual in the chapter. Bishop is one of the few individuals to appear in three separate sections in this book, also appearing prominently in the chapter devoted to arbitration, where he is placed "at the very top of the list" by his peers. Bishop received more votes than any other lawyer in the research for this particular area.

Bishop's third appearance is in the commercial litigation section, as one of three King & Spalding lawyers featured. Managing partner of the Houston office Robert Meadows gained accolades for his "top-tier" energy, environment, product liability and toxic tort litigation practice, while the "terrific" Reagan Simpson, chair of the American College of Trial Lawyers' federal legislation committee, completes the King & Spalding group in this area.
Individual partners also appear in two further chapters. Julie McWhirter "really stands out" in the trademarks research, and the firm recently established a presence in the insolvency and restructuring arena thanks to the lateral hire of Myron Sheinfeld from Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP. Sheinfeld is now senior counsel at the firm and "a nationally renowned player in this field".
