Three of the firm's practice areas stand out in the recommendations.
Haynes & Boone LLP in Who's Who Legal: Texas
The firm's competition lawyers fared particularly well in our competition research, notching up more nominees than any other firm in the chapter. Head of the white collar, antitrust and securities group, the "quite outstanding" Barry McNeil has served on the antitrust division of the Department of Justice, as has "nationally respected" Alison Smith. McNeil appears in two further chapters, garnering praise for his work in business crime defence and commercial litigation. Robin Hartman's skills as a trial lawyer were extolled by prominent figures during the research, and "young and outstanding" Ronald Breaux shines in criminal antitrust matters for companies and individuals in areas such as price fixing and bid rigging.
Haynes & Boone's franchise practice also scoops the top spot thanks to practice leader Joyce Mazero, "an expert in complex cross-border matters" and two other colleagues: Deborah Coldwell, who "gets excellent results" in her franchise litigation-focused practice, and the "superb" Gayle Cannon whose advisory work is much admired. The strength in depth boasted by the firm's practice ensures its position as a major market leader.
Four lawyers earn nominees in the Insolvency chapter. Described as "the cream of the crop" by one source, Robin Phelan leads the votes for the firm. Robert Albergotti was described as "one of the finest lawyers you will ever run across", while Charles Beckham, "clearly at the top of the list", is currently representing Americas Mining Corporation. The nationally recognised president of the American Bankruptcy Institute, John Penn, completes the group.
The "first-rate" real estate practice provides four of the firm's lawyers for our list. Dallas's Timothy Powers, described as "very much a leading player", is chairman of the firm's international practice group. "At the top of her game" was how one contributor described Ann Saegert at the Richardson office, and in San Antonio the "excellent" Steven Waters's expertise in choice of entity and entity formation was highlighted, as was his strength in corporate lease facilities work. Robert Wilson completes the listing in the real estate section and is "particularly strong at debt restructuring", according to one contributor.
The employee benefits, and management labour & employment, sections host two of the firm's lawyers in each. "Blockbusting" William Strock, who has represented Exxon Mobil Corporation and "top-notch" litigator Arthur Carter represent the strong labour and employment practice. On the employee benefits side, sources praised Charles Plenge and Greta Cowart. The department has represented clients such as Hitachi Consulting Corporation and Gulf/Chevron in litigation and advisory matters.
Jeff Civins and Mary Mendoza also made a strong showing in the Environment chapter: the "high calibre" Civins has a broad practice and Mendoza was described as a "rising star", with particular note being made of her transactional and brownfield expertise.
