Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP in Who's Who Legal: Texas

The firm as it exists today results from the merger in 1995 between Dallas firm Gardere & Wynne and Houston’s Sewell & Riggs. Over time the firm has expanded beyond its Texan borders into Latin America. Clients have included Greyhound, in its restructuring and reorganisation, and lawyers from Gardere acted as national counsel in asbestos litigation for one of the largest aluminium producers in the world.

The firm’s dynamic approach earned respect among our sources, who consider it to be “one of the leading regional firms”.

Nine of the firm’s practitioners appear in the following pages, appearing in one-third of the chapters overall. Particular strength is found in company-focused practice areas such as corporate governance.

Competition is a very strong suit for Gardere, which sees lawyers involved in cases for many national and international firms. Curtis Frisbie has been “involved in some very big pieces of antitrust litigation”, representing WPP Global among others.

Mark Bayer attracted favourable comments for his work as a major case litigator, representing clients from industries including insurance, advertising and aviation. Other standout practitioners are former Los Angeles assistant United States attorney Thomas Hagemann, who excelled in our business crime research as a practitioner who peers “rate as the best”, and the “perennial” Larry Schoenbrun, whose candidacy was warmly received in the corporate governance research. He has served as counsel for special committees of boards of directors as well as for audit committees in governance matters. In addition to strength in the corporate field, practitioners in areas such as environment and employee benefits also appeared on our radar screens.
