Robert Carr Woods and James Guthrie Davidson founded Woods & Davidson in Singapore in 1861 and Rodyk & Davidson LLP traces its beginnings to this early partnership. The 2002 merger with HelenYeo & Partners brought together Singapore’s oldest law firm with one of the newest and created an entity with close to 100 lawyers with offices in Singapore and Shanghai. The firm’s core practice areas revolve around corporate, finance, IP, litigation, arbitration and real estate. Fourteen Rodyk lawyers appear in 10 chapters on the following pages.

Rodyk & Davidson LLP in Who's Who Legal: Singapore

The firm’s greatest concentration comes in the chapters relating to dispute resolution. Philip Jeyaretnam SC appears in both the commercial litigation and construction chapters where he was praised as “one of the premier construction disputes lawyers in the region”. Paul Wong joins him in the section and was described by sources as a “top-notch individual”, particularly on engineering matters. Lawrence Teh is another highly rated practitioner and he received sufficient nominations to appear in the litigation and aviation chapters. Teh is a member of the firm’s litigation and arbitration practice group and comes recommended for his liability and insurance claims work. Lok Vi Ming SC heads the firm’s aviation practice group and joins Teh in the related chapter. Lok was praised to researchers as “the man”, “excellent” and “very experienced”.

Rodyk also boasts a prominent nominee in the mergers and acquisitions chapter – Valerie Ong. Ong heads the firm’s corporate finance practice and was consistently recommended to researchers. Respondents to our survey “have a great deal of respect for” Tan Joo Thye’s project finance practice and he features prominently in the related chapter. The firm’s real estate group also garnered nominations for its work on complex, large-scale projects such as the 52-unit Hilton Towers development. Dorothy Chia was praised as “one of the deans of development in the Singapore market” and her work on behalf of developers and investors was noted. She is also active on leasing, acquisition, construction and operation transactions.

Lee Ai Ming is one of Singapore’s leading intellectual property lawyers and appears in both the patents and trademarks chapters. Lee heads the firm’s IP and technology group and is said by sources to have a “very well established” trademarks practice. She is currently president of the Singapore section of the Asian patent attorneys’ association and emerges from the patent research with nothing but praise. Lee is also one of only seven lawyers featured in the franchise chapter and her practice in this area is said to be “fantastic”. She has served on the advisory panel of the Trade Development Board on Franchising. Gilbert Leong completes the firm’s strong contingent on the following pages with an excellent showing in the regulatory communications chapter. Leong has worked extensively on regulatory matters in the telecoms arena and is rated as “one of the best” by sources.
