Baker & McKenzie has been assisting clients in the Asia-Pacific region for more than 40 years. The firm has had a presence in Singapore since 1981 and the formation of a joint law venture with local firm Wong & Leow in 2001 strengthened its presence in the region. The JLV is now home to lawyers well versed in both local and international law, six of them feature in the following publication.
Baker & McKenzie.Wong & Leow in Who's Who Legal: Singapore
Kenneth Chia is one of the associated principals at the joint venture and maintains an excellent reputation in the region. Chia features in two closely related chapters in the publication: competition and regulatory communications. He is said to be “up-to-speed on competition” matters and clients include telecoms companies, software corporations, computer manufacturers and various high-tech companies. Sources in our regulatory communications chapter noted his reputation at “the intersection between telecoms and antitrust”, an area in which he is said to be “outstanding”.
As the accompanying pie chart illustrates, the firm’s largest concentration is in the trademarks chapter. Andy Leck’s IP litigation practice was recommended on more than one occasion and Lorraine Anne Tay joins him in the chapter. Tay’s trademark registration practice is rated as “one of the best”.
The firm also boasts a strong tax practice, particularly in the areas of tax planning and advice to financial institutions and large multinational clients. Edmund Leow’s cross-border and general tax planning advice for multinational and Fortune 100 corporations was noted and he is rated as one of the leaders in this area. Paul Elliott represents the firm in the project finance chapter, from which he emerges as one of Singapore’s most nominated practitioners. His “impressive work ethic” and “attention to detail” were noted and he was recently lead partner on the project development and financing of a 1,400MW gas-fired power station in Thailand.
