According to managing partner Debora de Hoyos, a successful merger is “5 per cent execution, 95 per cent strategy.” Crucial factors in the choice of merger partner included the complementary fit between existing practice strengths and client distribution. For de Hoyos, business flow in the merged firm provides further proof that theirs was a sound tactical integration: she describes the majority of their largest clients as “meaningfully transatlantic”, in the sense that they require cross-border expertise or do their business at an international level.

Although the firm continues to regard corporate transactions, litigation and finance as the core practices in its largest office, Chicago, a mixture of client demand and self-reflection is leading it to build in others: real estate, securitisation, intellectual property, tax and environment are seen as promising areas. Hoyos describes the firm as “a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary culture with diverse specialties.” A congenial atmosphere prevails between individuals within the firm, and between Mayer Brown lawyers and opposing counsel. “Although we are very tough, zealous and focused on integrity and good judgement in representing their clients, we do so in a way that doesn’t render us obnoxious to our opponents. We are perceived as civil and business-like. Practising at Mayer Brown is gratifying in terms of both the uniform quality of service and the experience of working together with one’s colleagues.”

Our research finds particular strength in the following practice areas, (relying on the number of attorneys listed in particular chapters): the capital markets chapter is dominated by seven Mayer Brown attorneys; five attorneys appear in our environment chapter; banking, competition and corporate governance each have four representatives (more than any other firm for these areas); and in commercial litigation, tax, franchise, and mergers and acquisitions the firm has three representatives. With expertise in eight further practice areas, Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw is an active presence in a total of 16 out of 22 practice areas covered by Who’s Who Legal: Illinois.
