Based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, nationally renowned Californian stalwart Munger Tolles & Olson LLP is made up of approximately 190 lawyers. The firm’s 15 nominees in 10 practice areas, indicate that it’s a firm that is well regarded for litigation and corporate and transactional work.

The firm’s commercial litigation practice was heaped with praise, with lawyers in the Los Angeles and fast growing San Francisco offices recommended for “creatively handled high-stakes matters”. The research has identified three highly nominated practitioners: Ronald Olson is “respected as a litigator and counsellor”, also appearing in the corporate governance chapter, while John Spiegel is “well renowned” for state and federal court complex business litigation. Brad Brian completes the firm’s contingent with a “substantial civil and criminal practice” and a reputation for work on the “big cases”. Brian also appears in the business crime chapter, where he is identified as “one of the firm’s heavy-hitters”. Two other practitioners, also from the Los Angeles office, join him. Richard Drooyan is a former chief assistant US attorney in the Los Angeles United States Attorney’s Office. Bart Williams has conducted internal corporate investigations in countries including the US, Colombia, Norway, the Philippines and Venezuela and he is another former assistant United States attorney, this time in the central district of California.


Employment law yields further nominees for the firm. Los Angeles’s Robert Johnson in the employee benefits chapter is an “outstanding executive compensation lawyer”. He is a recipient of the V Judson Klein Award from the Taxation Section of the State Bar. Glenn Pomerantz appears in the management labour and employment chapter, where his “ability to see straight to the heart of the most complex matters”, especially for clients in the entertainment and media industries, impressed sources.
MTO’s corporate lawyers are also well represented. The firm’s real estate practice has a “great reputation in the field” and two practitioners in the chapter. The “grand old man of Californian real estate”, Richard Volpert’s practice concentrates on planning and developing large-scale real estate projects. In an official capacity, he is a former member of ACREL’s board of governors. With an “excellent transactional practice”, O’Malley Miller represents institutional investors and lenders.


Ronald Olson is a “very eminent figure” in corporate governance in addition to his commercial litigation practice. Olson has represented the board of trustees of the Getty Trust in governance matters. Stephen Rose represents the firm in the Corporate Tax chapter. His well-respected practice focuses on the structuring and taxation aspects of complex business transactions.


The M&A chapter sees Robert Adler included. His “diverse transactional practice” impressed our sources. MTO’s final nominee represents the firm’s insurance and reinsurance practice. Cary Lerman boasts an “excellent reputation” in insurance coverage matters and policyholder representation work. One impressed respondent described him as “the finest lawyer I’ve ever met”.
