In 1970 he was appointed assistant lecturer in general theory of the state at the Guanabara State University (now Rio de Janeiro State University), and professor of civil litigation at the Brazilian Faculty of Legal Science in Rio de Janeiro, having been recommended to the chair of this discipline by the Federal Education Council in 1971. In 1978 he was nominated professor of civil litigation at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, where he is also a member of the development council.
Mr Bermudes is a member of the Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and federal district sections of the Brazilian Bar Association; the Institute of Brazilian Lawyers; the International Association of Procedural Law; the Spanish-American Institute of Procedural Law; and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers.
In addition to several articles, essays and legal opinions on insurance law, Sergio Bermudes has broad experience in the provision of reinsurance and insurance litigation, arbitration and consultancy services.
He has spoken at over 200 conferences at almost every law school in Brazil, at regional branches of the Brazilian Bar Association and at congresses, seminars and other legal events both at home and abroad.
He is fluent in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish.
