Biography: Arbitration

George von Mehren leads the International Dispute Resolution (IDR) group at Squire Sanders. Following the Firm's combinations in 2011 with Hammonds LLP and 80 Perth-based lawyers from Minter Ellison, the IDR group now operates from 36 offices in 17 countries. The Firm is ranked in the 2011 GAR 30 and listed by The American Lawyer's 2011 Arbitration Scorecard as a top practice globally for large case representations. Recent editions of the Scorecard have recognised two of George's victories as among the largest awards in the world.

With more than 30 years of experience in complex adversarial proceedings, George has an established record of working effectively with counsel from Europe, Latin America and Asia to achieve strong results for clients. George has acted as lead counsel in many major commercial and bilateral investment treaty arbitrations involving the energy, financial, gold mining, telecom and manufacturing industries. In seven of those cases, claims exceeded US$1 billion. He also acts as an arbitrator.

George is a US representative to the ICC Commission on Arbitration; a member of the ICC Court of Arbitration's task force on the convention on the recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards, and the ICC's task force on amiable composition and ex aequo et bono principles in international arbitration. A frequent commentator on arbitration, George presents at many conferences, including those hosted by the ICC, ICDR, Office of the Attorney General of Ecuador and Harvard Law School.

George received his JD from Harvard University, where he was an editor of Harvard Law Review, MA and BA, both from Cambridge University and AB, magna cum laude, from Harvard University.
