In 1983 Rudolf Rentsch graduated with a Masters in electrical engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (Dipl Ing ETH), and in 1986 he earned an additional Masters in law at the University of St Gallen (lic iur HSG). He practised for many years as a patent attorney and became registered with the Zurich Bar in 1990. He is admitted to practise as an attorney-at-law before all courts in Switzerland and before the European Patent Office. Rudolf Rentsch is fluent in German, English and French.
Rudolf Rentsch has been an elected member of the Swiss Federal Arbitration commission for the exploitation of copyright and neighbouring rights between 1997 and 2011. In 2011, Rudolf Rentsch was elected by the Swiss Parliament to become a non-permanent judge of the newly established Swiss Federal Patent Court.
