Jan's areas of practice are: complex civil litigation and international commercial arbitration, private international law, insurance, reinsurance, insolvency, banking and financial services law.
Jan's experience as counsel, expert witness and arbitrator has included arbitrations held in Bermuda, London, Hong Kong, Singapore and the US. He has appeared as counsel before the Bermuda courts in over 50 commercial cases reported online. He is the co-author, with Terry O'Neill, of The Law of Reinsurance in England and Bermuda (Sweet & Maxwell, 3rd edition). The first edition won the 1998 British Insurance Law Association book prize. He also edited the chapter on insurance companies in Tofty & Moss on lnsolvency (Sweet & Maxwell), and has contributed the section on Bermuda law to the fourth edition of Mark Hoyle's Freezing and Search Orders (Informa).
Jan obtained an LLB degree from the University of London, and an LLM degree from the University of Cambridge. He was admitted to the bar of England and Wales in 1983, and to the Bar of Bermuda in 1981. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and a member of ARIAS (US), ARIAS (UK), the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Bar Association and the International Association of Defense Counsel.
