Biography: Mining

A former judge and a Fulbright Scholar, Senai W Andemariam is the head of the international division at Berhane Gila-Michael & Associates the senior partner of which co-drafted the Eritrean Mining and Petroleum Exploration Proclamations as well as the first Investment Proclamation of Eritrea. Since November 2004, Mr Andemariam has been involved in a variety of consultancies involving mining, aviation and international trade issues. Some of the clients he has worked with include Boeing, Morgan Stanley, Antofagasta Minerals SA, Total, Amazon, the World Bank and Zurich Insurance Company. He has extensive mining law experience and has been engaged in due diligence and related consultancies for the most active mining companies in Eritrea. His consultancy works have enabled him to correspond and work with law firms such as Allen & Overy, Sherman & Sterling, Lang Michener, Clayton UtZ, Cassels Brock & Blackwell and Eversheds.

Mr Andemariam earned his LLB (with Distinction) from the University of Asmara and his LLM from the Georgetown University Law Center (with Distinction). He has been a lecturer of law since 2001 and teaches such courses as international trade law, maritime law and aviation law. Moreover, he drafted the Evidence Code of Eritrea and has been instrumental in reviewing and finalising the Draft Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code of Eritrea. He has been a member of the American Society of International Law, the International Law Association and the Society of International Economic Law and has published articles with reputed journals.
