Jim gained an LLB from Dalhousie University in 1974 and a BBA from St Francis Xavier University in 1971. He was called to the Bar in Alberta in 1975.
Jim is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Bar Association, the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation, the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, the Glencoe Club, the Calgary Petroleum Club, the Ranchmen's Club, the Bow Valley Club, the Glencoe Golf and Country Club, and is the governor and executive committee member of St Francis Xavier University.
Jim was editor of the oil and gas chapter of O'Brien's Encyclopedia of Forms. He is the author of various legal papers, including 'Banking and Loan Arrangements' for the Legal Education Society of Alberta Corporate Commercial Group. He has been chair of various seminars on banking law and practice and has presented papers on matters relating to the Investment Canada Act and resource law. Jim is also a member of a subcommittee to review corporate directors' issues relating to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act.
Jim has participated in fundraising activities for various charitable organisations and has been involved in coaching and assisting in community sports activities. He is presently co-chair of a major donor division of the United Way of Calgary and Area.
