Biography: Mergers and Acquisitions

Dr Hani Sarie-Eldin is the founder and managing partner of Sarie-Eldin & Partners – Legal Advisors. Dr Sarie-Eldin has extensive experience in legal practice covering over 22 years, and is specialised in M&A capital markets, project finance, banking and other related business law matters. His wide practical experience in M&A is also complemented by immense academic experience. Dr Sarie-Eldin is a professor and head of the commercial and maritime law department, faculty of law, Cairo University.

Dr Sarie-Eldin also serves as a non-executive chairman and board member of various listed and non-listed companies including Banque Misr; Cairo University member of the board of directors, General Authority for Investment and Free Zones; board member of the Egyptian British Business Council; vice president of legal affairs, American Chamber of Commerce; and member of the advisory board of the Arab regional forum at the IBA. Dr Sarie-Eldin has published a number of leading textbooks on matters including the legal aspects of companies law; project finance; capital markets regulation; international arbitration in financial disputes; and public-private partnership. He obtained an Academic Excellence award from Cairo University for his legal academic research in 2002.

Previously, Dr Sarie-Eldin served as a chairman of the Capital Market Authority in Egypt from 2005 to 2007. He was also the group director and general counsel of the Al-Futtaim Group in Dubai from 2003 to 2005. Dr Sarie-Eldin headed the capital markets group and was a senior partner at Shalakany Law Office from 2001 to 2005. He participated in other professional activities and was a member of the governors' board of the Central Bank of Egypt from 2005 to 2007 and also board member of the Bank of Alexandria (2002-2005). He was a visiting professor of Banking & Capital Markets at Queen Mary, University of London (2000-2005). He is active in various international organisations including the advisory board of the International Law Institute Procurement Law Center of the US and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in the UK.

Dr Sarie-Eldin obtained his PhD in international business law from the centre for commercial legal studies at Queen Mary & Westfield College (now Queen Mary, University of London) in 1994. He gained his diploma in public law from Cairo University (with distinction) in 1989, where he also completed the diploma in private law (with distinction) in 1988 and the Licence en Droit (with distinction) in 1987.
