Biography: Private funds

Michael G Tannenbaum is a founding partner of Tannenbaum Helpern and heads the firm's financial services, private funds and capital markets group. With over 30 years of experience, he regularly advises clients on the organisational, structural, compliance and regulatory aspects of private funds, hedge funds, private equity arrangements, commodity pools, complex structured arrangements, index products, exchange-traded funds, seeding arrangements, mergers, acquistions and consolidations, and related tax and ERISA implications. His clients include investment advisers, funds, fund sponsors, multi-manager and fund-of-fund platforms, principals, global institutions, law firms relating to matters of US law, and family offices with regard to regulatory and organisational matters, as well as estate and succession planning. He has served as an arbitrator in complex private fund and investment management cases and in National Futures Association disputes and business conduct matters.

Michael is currently a vice chair of the American Bar Association's hedge funds subcommittee and was a participant and presenter at the SEC Hedge Fund Roundtable in Washington, DC in 2001. He has written and co-authored numerous articles on hedge fund law and regulation, such as: "Current Regulatory Regime For Investment Advisers Post Dodd-Frank", New York State Bar Association; 2012 "Developments in Family Office Regulation", The Hedge Fund Law Report, 2010-2011; "New Regulatory Provisions in the US Affecting Non-US Investment Advisers", GlobalNote for an industry conference presentation, 2010; "Protecting the Family Office by Using Managed Accounts", 2010; "Hedge Fund Regulatory Outlook for 2009"; "Hedge Funds Brace Themselves for More Regulation in the US", The Hedge Fund Journal, 2009; "Putting Structures in Place" (relating to carbon funds), Environmental Finance, 2009; "How to Start a Hedge Fund in the US", Hedge Fund Manager, 2007.

He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences including the Practising Law Institute's hedge funds programme, numerous GAIM and MAR conferences, and programmes sponsored by the International Bar Association (private funds section). Michael has served, with distinction, as co-chair of US Managed Funds Association (MFA), served on a steering committee of the legal issues forum (2006 to 2008) and is a past president of the Hedge Fund Association.

Michael is a graduate of New York University Law School (LLM Taxation, 1971), New York Law School (JD, 1970) and Fairlegih Dickinson University (BS Biology, 1967).
