Biography: Arbitration

Gerold Zeiler has been a partner of Schoenherr since 1998. His practice focuses on international commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and international litigation. He regularly sits as an arbitrator and acts as counsel for parties in both ad hoc arbitration proceedings as well as administered arbitration proceedings, including proceedings under the VIAC, ICC, UNCITRAL and ICSID Rules. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb), a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration, a member of the board of the Austrian Arbitration Association and listed on the panel of arbitrators of the Vienna International Arbitration Court, the Foreign Trade Court of Arbitration at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce, and the Arbitration Court at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania. He is fluent in English and German.

Gerold has over 20 years of experience, acting as chairman, sole arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator and expert witness, as well as counsel in more than a hundred ad hoc and administered arbitration proceedings, including proceedings under the Vienna Rules (VIAC), ICC Rules of Arbitration, UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, Rules of the Arbitration Court of the Economic Chamber of the Czech Republic, as well as ICSID arbitration proceedings. Recent cases include the counsel of a claimant in investment arbitrations against Romania and Bulgaria, gas and energy related litigations and arbitrations, including the representation of a South-East European government against a foreign investor and the appointment as chairman and party appointed arbitrator in various arbitrations concerning construction disputes and the energy field.

Gerold Zeiler is the author of numerous articles and books on international litigation and arbitration, including the first commentary on the new Austrian Arbitration law; Arbitration (Schiedsverfahren 2006), and a co-editor of the Austrian Arbitration Yearbook.

He has been sitting as chairman, sole arbitrator, party appointed arbitrator, expert witness, as well as counsel in more than one hundred ad hoc and administered arbitration proceedings; including proceedings under the Vienna Rules (VIAC), ICC Rules of Arbitration, UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules, Rules of the Arbitration Court of the Economic Chamber of the Czech Republic, as well as ICSID arbitration proceedings.

He obtained his masters degree (1988) and his doctorate (1996) in law from the University of Vienna and is a graduate of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators' Diploma Course in International Commercial Arbitration (DipICArb, 2004).
