Mr Bernardes graduated from the University of São Paulo Law School (1977) and has a Bachelor's degree in Education at the Oswaldo Cruz University of São Paulo (1977). Mr Bernardes obtained his postgraduate degree at the International Commercial Law Institute of the University of Cologne, Germany (1980 to 1982).
Mr Bernardes is the author of many articles on a variety of issues involving commercial and corporate law and is currently a member of the Council of the International Bar Association (IBA), chair ex-officio of its Bar Issues Commission (BIC) policy committee and member of its council of the Professional Practice Interest Division (PPID); member of the council of the São Paulo section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/SP) and chairman of its Commission of Law Firms; member of the international relations commission of the Brazilian Federal Bar (OAB); member of the board of officers of the Center of Studies of the Brazilian Law Firms (CESA); and member of the management board of Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo.
In addition, Mr Bernardes is a former president of the of Center of Studies of the Brazilian Law Firms (Centro de Estudos das Sociedades de Advogados CESA), former president and president of honor of AIJA (Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats), former vice president of the Rio de Janeiro Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry and former director of the São Paulo Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among many others.
Mr Bernardes has been involved in many of the major corporate restructuring and reorganisation operations as well as in many of the largest mergers and acquisitions in Brazil. Mr Bernardes has also actively participated in complex commercial operations involving major Brazilian and international companies and the defence of the most active international cartels that affected the Brazilian market.
