In the first two years of his practice, he was extensively involved in corporate work including acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate restructuring exercises, as well as corporate and commercial litigation. Since 1999, he has been primarily involved in banking and finance, debt and equity capital markets and mergers and acquisitions.
His conventional capital markets experience includes advising on the issue of corporate bonds, the issue of Tier 1 and Tier 2 securities for various Malaysian banks, several significant Regulation S/Rule 144A initial public offerings in Malaysia, including Maxis Berhad, Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad and PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad.
His Islamic capital markets experience includes advising on the issue of RM4.85 billion Istisna notes by Jimah Energy Ventures Sdn Bhd for the financing of a 1,400 MW coal-fired power plant, the issue of a Sukuk Ijarah Islamic securities programme by BNM Sukuk Berhad in connection with the acquisition and lease back of real properties owned by Bank Negara Malaysia (the Central Bank of Malaysia), the issue of Islamic bonds with detachable warrants under the principle of Sukuk Musyarakah by WCT Engineering Berhad, the issue of Islamic irredeemable convertible preference shares by Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd to SK Telecom Co Ltd and the issue of subordinated notes by Maybank Islamic Bank Berhad on the principle of Sukuk Musyarakah, which qualify as Tier-2 capital.
