In his telecoms practice, Christian Schmelz advises on a broad range of regulatory issues in both the fixed and mobile sectors. He co-authored parts of the Austrian Telecoms Act, initially advising the legislator and the regulator, and then counselling telecoms operators. This practice includes representation in mobile licence tenders, fixed network operations and advising telecoms providers on the full range of regulatory issues including interconnection, convergence and EU regulatory matters. Christian Schmelz regularly publishes on telecoms matters and is a frequent speaker on telecoms issues at seminars and conferences.

Christian Schmelz, who is a member of the Vienna bar, graduated from the University of Vienna in 1979. Before entering law practice, Dr Schmelz worked as assistant professor at the University of Vienna. He joined Schoenherr in 1984. Since then he has been serving not only national and international corporate clients but also municipalities, provinces, the federal administration, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and the European Commission. He has been member of advisory boards on legislative projects such as amendments to the Austrian Environmental Impact Assessment Act, the Waste Disposal Act and the Act on Environmental Management Auditing Schemes.
Dr Schmelz is lecturer at the University of Vienna, co-editor of the monthly journal ecolex, which emphasises administrative and environmental law, and author of numerous books and articles on environmental law.
