Biography: Insolvency & Restructuring

Born Athens 1955, George Bazinas received his education at the University of Athens (1978) and King's College London (LLM 1981) and was admitted to the Athens Bar in 1981, Court of Appeals in 1986 and Supreme Court in 1990. He has founded Bazinas Law Firm offering specialised legal services on civil & commercial law matters, including both litigious and non litigious proceedings, in a variety of industries.

He specialises in complex civil and commercial litigation and arbitration involving most types of business disputes, banking and finance law, and is actively engaged in the field of domestic and cross-border insolvency and reorganisation. He has extensive experience of cross-border disputes and proceedings, and acts mainly for international law firms, investment and hedge funds, multinational corporations, foreign governments and governmental organisations.

He is widely published in his fields of expertise and his publications in English include the chapters on Greek law in Collier International Business Insolvency Guide (Matthew Bender/Lexis-Nexis, 2008); EU Banking and Insurance Insolvency, (Oxford University Press 2006); Security over Immovables in Selected Jurisdictions (CILS - Oceana, OUP 2005); International Secured Transactions (CILS-Oceana, OUP, 2010); Commercial Litigation Proceedings (European Lawyer, 2011), as well as an English translation of the Greek Insolvency Code and the Law on Privatizations in Greece (Annotated Guide Vol, Greek Legislation, Bazinas Law Firm 2011). Selected recent publications in journals include articles on "Insolvency vs Arbitration" (Eurofenix, 2010); "A modern Greek Tragedy: the cross-border insolvency perspective" (Recovery, summer 2010); "The recent reform of the Greek Insolvency Code", (Insol World 3rd Quarter, 2010); "The Odyssey of a Grek Sovereign Debt Restructuring and the Role of Privatisations" (Insol World 3rd Quarter, 2011), "Greek Privatisations: A Euro-'Phoenix' Tale" (Eurofenix Autumn, 2011).

He is a member of the International Insolvency Institute, the American Bankruptcy Institute, INSOL International, INSOL Europe, the American Hellenic Institute, the International Bar Association and the Hellenic Commercial Lawyers Association.
