Biography • Product Liability Defence

Eugene Schoon is a litigation partner in the Chicago office. He focuses on product liability defence, with particular emphasis on pharmaceutical products and medical devices. He has extensive experience in defending cases involving anticoagulant drugs, cholesterol-lowering drugs, antifibrinolytics, antipsychotics, plasma derivatives, implants and other medical products. He has been engaged frequently as national coordinating and trial counsel in cases pending in several states. He has defended third-party payer cases, consumer class actions and MDL proceedings. Mr Schoon has tried jury cases in Illinois, Texas, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and South Carolina and prepared cases in other jurisdictions. Mr Schoon has handled several major matters for health-care clients including False Claims Act Defense, medical liability and tort reform cases. He has argued appeals in several federal courts of appeal and state appellate courts.

Prior to joining Sidley, Mr Schoon clerked for Judge Ruggero J Aldisert of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Mr Schoon is a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute and the Lawyers Club of Chicago.

Mr Schoon received his JD (with highest distinction) from the Valparaiso University School of Law in 1980, his MA from Indiana State University in 1977 and his BA from Calvin College in 1975. Admissions include: US Supreme Court; Illinois; various US Court of Appeals and US District courts.
