Biography: Arbitration

Stephen L Drymer specialises in domestic and international arbitration and ADR, regularly acting as arbitrator and mediator, and as counsel in international commercial and investment disputes. He has acted in disputes in the manufacturing, construction, petrochemical, oil and gas, financial services, IT, transportation, aerospace and telecommunication industries, among others.

Mr Drymer also advises and represents domestic and foreign clients, government and private, and has extensive experience in the resolution of public international disputes, including boundary delimitations and the negotiation of treaties. He was a negotiator for Canada in the renewal of the Canada-US Pacific Salmon Treaty and counsel for Canada in the mediation of disputes under that treaty. He was counsel for the government of Nova Scotia before an international tribunal constituted to determine the offshore boundary between the province of Nova Scotia and the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. He was an adviser to the Secretary General of the United Nations and mediator in a territorial and resource dispute between Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. And he is currently a neutral evaluator in an international dispute involving private and public parties and interests in the Middle East. Mr Drymer is also particularly active in the resolution of sport disputes before the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada and the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne.

In 2006 Mr Drymer was named by Global Arbitration Review as one of the world's "45 under 45" leading international arbitration lawyers, and he is recognised as a top arbitration practitioner in many other directories, such as Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, PLC Which lawyer?, The Best Lawyers in Canada and The 50 Best Lawyers in Canada.

In addition to numerous professional associations of which he is a director or member, Mr Drymer is a member of the panel of international arbitrators of the Canadian National Section of the ICC, the AAA/ICDR International Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators, the Panel of Arbitrators of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC) and the Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada.

On 1 January 2012, Norton Rose OR merges with Macleod Dixon to become Norton Rose Canada.
