Biography: Competition

Trevor Soames is an experienced Brussels-based advocate, qualified as a barrister and solicitor-advocate, with 25+ years experience of complex competition/regulatory cases. His practice focuses on client critical contentious cases covering the whole range of antitrust including mergers, monopolisation (dominance), state aid and cartel investigations in Europe and the USA. Trevor has a wealth of experience across a wide range of global industries including aerospace, automotive, aviation, beverages, biotechnology, broadcasting, consumer products, chemicals, defence, energy, high tech/internet, manufacturing, packaging, telecommunications, and shipping. A significant element of his practice relates to complex cases that involve the interface of intellectual property and antitrust.

His innovative work has been regularly recognised by the legal directories and his leadership of the team that successfully concluded the European Commission's Article 102 Qualcomm investigation won the Legal Business Competition Team of the Year 2010. Other successes include the conclusion of the European Commission's Microsoft/Internet Explorer investigation, securing the dropping of all charges against United in the Commission's Air Cargo investigation and the unconditional clearance of the United Airlines/Continental Airlines merger.

An experienced advocate, Mr Soames is often called upon to appear before the agencies and the European/national courts. Regularly published and a frequent conference speaker as well as an associate editor of Butterworth's Competition Law Encyclopaedia, he is recognised in all the principal directories as one of the leading EC competition and antitrust lawyers. Formerly co-chair of Howrey's worldwide antitrust practice and founder of its highly successful Brussels office, ranked as one of only four Brussels Elite practices by GCR in 2009 and 2010, Trevor is now focused entirely on client work.

Biography: Aviation

Trevor Soames is an experienced advocate and partner in Shearman & Sterling's Brussels office. He is qualified as a barrister and solicitor-advocate, with over 25 years' experience of complex aviation competition and regulatory cases, having been involved in the sector since BA's privatisation and the 1986 adoption of the first aviation liberalisation package. Trevor has represented clients in aviation mergers (most recently United Airlines/Continental), many aviation alliances and cooperation agreements over the years (such as the TPJVA between bmi/LH/SK, UA/LH/SK, UA/bmi, A++ between UA/CO/LH/AC), cartel investigations (Air Cargo for UA), dominance cases (Aer Lingus Interlining, Brussels Airport) and state aid (Aer Lingus, Air France, Olympic) as well as associated business areas such as ground handling (Greece, Spain, AIA), airport charges, licensing, scarce capacity allocation and GDS/CRS issues. Trevor has repeatedly been identified by Euromoney as one of the top 20 aviation lawyers in the world and consistently included in previous editions of this publication.

Trevor can draw upon a wealth of experience across many global industries to assist clients (lead counsel in a number of major recent cases including Qualcomm and Microsoft/Internet Explorer), and has a strong track record of success. His innovative work has been regularly recognised by the legal directories, and his leadership of the team that successfully concluded the European Commission's Article 102 Qualcomm investigation won the Legal Business award for Competition Team of the Year 2010.

Formerly co-chair of Howrey's worldwide antitrust practice and founder of its highly successful Brussels office, ranked as one of only four elite practices in Brussels by Global Competition Review in 2009 and 2010, Trevor is now focused entirely on client work.
