Jan graduated from Leiden University, where he read civil and business law, and Radboud University Nijmegen, where he read business administration. Jan also studied at Science Po (Paris) and Hastings College of the Law (San Francisco). Jan was admitted to the bar in 1994.
Owing to a four-year stint as a manager for a listed Dutch construction company, he is well acquainted with working in a corporate environment and familiar with boardroom consultancy under turbulent circumstances.
Jan has represented companies as well as individuals in complex cases of business-related crime and regulatory matters. His cases range from financial fraud, corruption, market abuse (insider trading, market manipulation) to money laundering or health and safety allegations, including corporate manslaughter. Jan is involved as a defence counsel in several major fraud cases. He is reputed for the discrete defence of public figures and for his representation of legal professionals in criminal and disciplinary matters.
He is a member of the board of the Dutch Bar, responsible for criminal law issues. He is a frequent author and lecturer on business crime, addressing both a legal and wider audience.
