Biography: Mining

Emery Kalamba is the founding partner of Kalamba & Associes, considered to be one of the leading firms practising mining law. He has extensive expertise in project financing, related to mineral exploration and mining. The firm regularly advises the major mining companies on all matters relating to mining assets and the conversion, acquisition and disposal of mining rights. Typical transactions will include due diligence on local mining companies, joint ventures and shareholders agreements, acquisitions and dispositions, royalties and mine construction and mine operation agreements. Emery Kalamba received his JD from the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Belgium and has been trained both in Europe (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and in the United States at Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC where he gained his LLM.

Emery Kalamba worked for eight years at a Washington DC-based law firm Duncan, Allen & Mitchell, where he handled various projects in the sector of foreign investments. Emery is the managing partner of Kalamba & Associes, a member of Kananga and Kinshasa Bars. He was vice minister of justice (1994), and assumed the functions of legal advisor in charge of mining for the vice premier minister of mines (1996) and for the governor of the Central Bank (1997 to 1999). He is currently a senator and vice president of the Commission of Foreign Affairs.
