He was president of the Portuguese Bar Association and member of the High Council of the Judiciary. He was the first president of the Portuguese Chapter of Club Español de Arbitraje, vice president (area of arbitration) of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Portuguese Country Reporter of ITA, member of the board (international relations) of Associação Portuguesa de Arbitragem, and member of the International Court of Arbitration of CCI. He is also member of the Rosters of Arbitration and Conciliation of ICSID.
Educated at Coimbra University (1966-1972), he has been junior professor of Coimbra and Lisbon Universities (1972-1981) and since 2004 visiting professor of Business Law and Dispute Resolution at Lisbon's Universidade Nova and of Energy and Politics of Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE). He has published texts about mediation and arbitration and lectured on these themes in Portugal, Spain, France, Brazil, Angola, USA, Cape Verde and Korea.
He is very active in arbitration, both ad hoc and institutionalised (CCI), national and international, as counsel and arbitrator, submitted to Portuguese, Brazilian, International, Spanish and Angolan law. He speaks English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.
