Biography: Arbitration

Eduardo Damião Gonçalves is a partner at MattosFilho VeigaFilho MarreyJr e Quiroga Advogados in Brazil. His areas of expertise include mainly domestic and international arbitration and environmental law.

Eduardo was the chairman of the Brazilian Committee on Arbitration (CBAR - www.cbar.org.br) from 2005 to 2009, a highly respected institution comprising Brazilian and international arbitration specialists focused on the development of arbitration in Brazil. He is currently an officer of the IBA arbitration committee and of Young ICCA. He is also a member of the French Arbitration Committee, the ICC Latin American arbitration group, the International Arbitration Institute (IAI), a member of the board of the arbitration centre for AMCHAM (SP), and he was the co-chair of the organising committee for the 2010 ICCA Congress in Rio de Janeiro.

He is listed as an arbitrator before several domestic arbitration institutions and has acted as counsel, coarbitrator and chairman of arbitration tribunals in a variety of international and domestic arbitrations under ICC and UNCITRAL rules and domestic arbitration institutions in matters involving e-commerce, telecommunications, satellites, construction agreements, energy, corporate matters, distribution, O&G and share purchase agreements, among others. He is the author of several articles on arbitration and has extensive experience as a speaker at conferences in both Brazil and abroad. Eduardo is a lecturer at the postgraduate courses of GVLaw in São Paulo.

Eduardo was educated at the Law School of the University of São Paulo (1994), where he obtained his PhD (2008) with a thesis on Arbitration; and at the University of Paris II (Panthéon-Assas), where he obtained a Masters (DEA/1997) in Private International Law with emphasis on arbitration under the coordination of the late professor Philippe Fouchard. He was also a visiting scholar at Boston University (2007). Eduardo speaks Portuguese, English, French and Spanish and has good knowledge of Italian.
