Biography: Oil and Gas

Manus Booysen is a partner and the head of Webber Wentzel's mining, energy and natural resources practice. Manus holds BA, LLB and MBA degrees from the University of Pretoria and was admitted as attorney of the High Court of South Africa during 1983 and subsequently also as notary and conveyancer. He completed the University of the Witwatersrand's Constitution Law programme for attorneys and advocates and served on the mining law committee of the International Bar Association's section on engineering, energy and resources law.

Manus advises a variety of clients on all aspects of mining, mineral and energy law. His experience includes advising on, negotiating and conducting mining-related corporate transactions and black economic empowerment transactions, rendering opinions on mining, oil and gas, administrative and environmental law, mining-related litigation and arbitrations and due diligence investigations relating to listings and strategic acquisitions. He acts for a number of leading South African and international mining and energy companies.

Manus frequently addresses conferences on various aspects of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, and its implementation, as well as Black Economic Empowerment issues and various other matters affecting the South African mining, oil and gas industries. From 1988 until 1995, Manus was employed as in-house legal adviser of the Rand Mines Group, providing legal advice on all aspects of the Rand Mines Group's activities. Prior to this, he was employed as legal adviser at Total South Africa Limited.

Manus made representations to the Parliamentary portfolio committee on the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and mining related legislation. He is a regular speaker at conferences in South Africa and abroad, addressing various aspects of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act, and its implementation, as well as Black Economic Empowerment issues and various other matters affecting the South African mining industry.
