Biography: Trademarks

Paul Blanchard is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office. An expert in intellectual property law, Paul's practice includes an emphasis on trademark counselling and litigation, product labelling and advertising, technology transfers and licensing, food and drug regulations, access to information, and trade secrets.

Paul is an advocate before the Supreme Court of Canada, the Federal Courts of Canada, the Ontario Courts of Justice and the Canadian Trade-marks Opposition Board. He has been a patron of the Canadian Institute for Conflict Resolution.

During his years of practice, Paul has accumulated extensive experience in government relations and is a published author and lecturer on Canadian access to information, trademarks, trade secrets, food and drug regulations, and copyright laws. Among other activities, he has been a frequent panellist on intellectual property subjects in Canada and the US.

A longtime supporter of Queen's University, Paul has been an honourary member of its faculty of law advisory council and served as a trustee on the board of trustees, the executive committee of its university council and the permanent national advisory board of the Queen's Annual Business Law Symposium. He is also past president of the Queen's University Ottawa alumni branch.

Paul has been listed as a leading lawyer in several legal industry publications, including The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers, Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory, WTR 1000, Who's Who Legal: Canada and PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook.

Paul is co-author of 'The BARBIE Case: The Supreme Court of Canada Restates the Law on Trade-mark Confusion', 96 TMR 1034 (2006) and The Regulations of Drug Advertising: The Times They Are a Changing. In addition, he is the author of Federal Access to Information and Privacy Legislation; the author of a chapter in the American Law Institute's Trademarks, Copyrights, and Unfair Competition for The General Practitioner; and the co-author of a chapter on intellectual property in the Financial Post's Canadian Trade and Investment Guide.
