Biography: Trademarks

Howard J Shire represents clients in all aspects of trademark and unfair competition law. A skillful litigator, he has successfully represented in court a wide range of clients from diverse fields, such as, for example, Toyota, BASF, Martha Stewart Living and Ozzy Osbourne, among others. He is also very experienced in trademark cancellation and opposition proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Mr Shire is an experienced mediator and arbitrator, and is a member of the International Trademark Association's panel of neutrals.

Mr Shire coordinates major corporate acquisitions involving the worldwide transfer of patents, trademarks and copyrights, and negotiates a wide variety of IP agreements, such as licenses and trademark coexistence agreements. He also counsels clients on IP matters relating to Internet issues, the selection of new trademarks and domain names, and has been in charge of worldwide trademark registration programs.

Mr Shire frequently lectures at professional and bar organisation programmes and is a prolific author. He is editor-in-chief of The Intellectual Property Strategist and is on the IP editorial advisory board of Law360. He is a former editor-in-chief of The Trademark Reporter, the leading scholarly journal devoted to trademark law.

Mr Shire received his JD from New York University Law School. He has a BA in Political Science from Brown University.
