Leonel's practice brings together insight into Mexican insurance and reinsurance laws and a global outlook driven by a demanding international clientele. His expertise in direct insurance cuts through contentious, transactional and regulatory aspects, with emphasis on innovative structures for products and business arrangements. On the reinsurance front, he advises reinsurers on contentious and contract issues in Mexico and in other Latin American countries, as well as reinsurance brokers on their regional business.
Leonel is a member of the insurance committee of the International Bar Association. He authored the chapter on Mexico in the inaugural edition of ICLF. The International Comparative Legal Guide to: Insurance and Reinsurance. He recently authored an article on terrorism insurance in Mexico in the Euromoney 2011/2012 International Reinsurance Review.
Leonel was admitted to practise in Mexico in 1998 after having studied his law degree at Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. In 2001 he was admitted by the Bar of the state of New York. In 1999 Leonel received an LLM degree from University College London, where he specialised in insurance and maritime law. In 2000 he received an LLM degree from Georgetown University Law Center. He is authorised by the Mexican Insurance Commission (CNSF) to issue legal validity opinions for insurance products.
Both Leonel and Creel, García-Cuéllar, Aiza y Enriquez were ranked 'Band 1' in insurance by Chambers & Partners. He is 'acclaimed for his proactive approach, commercial awareness and excellent knowledge of the insurance industry in Mexico.' (Chambers & Partners, Latin America Guide 2012).
