Biography: Competition

Martin is a partner in Webber Wentzel's competition practice.

He has been recognised as a leading competition law practitioner by a number of prominent domestic and international journals and competition agencies.

Martin has a BA LLB from the University of Cape Town and a Certificate in Competition Law from the University of the Witwatersrand.

He is the co-author of a book on competition law titled A Practical Guide to the South African Competition Act. The book is prescribed reading at a number of South African universities. Martin has also had numerous articles published and has presented papers at a number of local conferences.

Martin has particular experience in the air travel, construction, health, fishing, forestry, liquid fuel and tobacco industries. His clients include BA/Comair, Healthman, JT International, Lafarge, Monier Roofing SA, Sasol, Stefanutti Stocks, Tanzanian Cigarette Company, the South African Private Practitioners Forum, Tongaat Hulett and UTI South Africa.

Martin has been involved in various significant competition law matters including representing: BA/Comair in complaint proceedings against South African Airways; the Tanzanian Cigarette Corporation in complaint proceedings before the Tanzanian Competition authorities; JT International in complaint proceedings against British American Tobacco; AC Whitcher in the successful review of the merger which had been approved between MTO Forestry and Boskor; Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline and Aspen Pharmacare in opposing interim relief sought by a number of pharmaceutical wholesalers; and Botash in complaint proceedings against Ansac, the longest running cartel proceedings in the history of the South African authorities.

He also advised Sasol and a major steel merchant in their competition law compliance reviews.
