Biography: Insurance & Reinsurance

Alexander von Ziegler is a partner of Schellenberg Wittmer's dispute resolution group in Zurich and heads the trade and transport team. He is specialised in all aspects of insurance and reinsurance law. He advises national and international insurers in high-profile defence or covers disputes before Swiss courts or international arbitration tribunals and coordinates complex litigations before international courts or authorities. For many years he has been in charge of high-profile aviation accident defences, the first of these relating to the mid-air collision over Lake Constance in 2002. Alexander von Ziegler is also specialised in the field of trade and transportation including maritime and aviation law.

After graduating from the University of Zurich School of Law in 1981, he obtained a master of laws from Tulane University, New Orleans (maritime law programme, LLM in admiralty) in 1984. He was admitted to the Bar in Switzerland in 1988 after joining Schellenberg Wittmer the same year, and became a partner in 1993. Since 1990 he has been lecturing at the University of Zurich, where, in 1999, he became associate professor and in 2005 professor for international trade law.

Alexander von Ziegler has worked with Swiss and international insurance companies and banks as well as with a London-based law firm specialising in commercial and insurance litigation. He is president of the Swiss Maritime Law Association and board member both of the European and the Swiss Aviation Law Associations. He was appointed expert and member of the delegation of the Swiss government at UNCITRAL for the drafting of the recently completed UN Convention on the International Carriage of Goods by Sea (Rotterdam Rules 2008).

Alexander von Ziegler teaches insurance law, international maritime, aviation, trade and transportation law at the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich. For many years he has also been part of the faculty of the LLM programme of the University of Zurich in the field of international trade and commercial law. He is a regular guest lecturer for many foreign universities or UNCITRAL. He has authored numerous publications in his fields of specialisation.
