Mr Hockett is the global head of Davis Polk's antitrust practice. He has served in the senior leadership of the ABA section of antitrust law for over 15 years, and currently serves as its vice-chair. He will become chair of the ABA section of antitrust law in 2013.
Mr Hockett has acted as lead counsel in over 100 antitrust class actions in industries such as microprocessors, telecommunications, optical disk drives, memory cards, LCD-TFT displays, medical equipment and chemical manufacturing; for wireless communications company in dozens of consumer class actions in more than 20 states challenging the legality of early termination fees, late fees, handset locking practices, arbitration agreements and text message pricing; in more than a dozen patent lawsuits involving a variety of technologies, including computers, software, e-commerce, medical devices, optical networking and telecommunications; for a large software company in high-profile trade secrets, copyright, interference with economic advantage and business theft case against largest competitor; as lead antitrust counsel for several multibillion-dollar mergers; tried and won defence judgment in antitrust action filed to stop newspaper merger and related divestiture; as lead counsel in a variety of securities class action and derivative claims in industries such as accounting, finance and telecommunications; and in defending large law firms against professional malpractice claims.
Mr Hockett is listed as a leading lawyer in several legal industry publications, including Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business; Legal Media Group's Benchmark Litigation; Woodward/White's Best Lawyers in America; The Legal 500 US; Practical Law Company's Which lawyer? and Cross-border Competition and Leniency Handbook; and Daily Journal's 'Top 100 Lawyers in California 2010'. In addition, Davis Polk's antitrust group was named a 'Competition Group of the Year' by Law360.
Mr Hockett is the author of numerous publications on antitrust matters and a frequent speaker on trial advocacy, intellectual property and competition issues.
He has served in the senior leadership of the American Bar Association's section of antitrust law for over 15 years, and currently serves as its vice chair. He will become chair of the section in 2013. Other memberships include the Association of Business Trial Lawyers and the board of directors of Bay Area Legal Aid (1999 to present). He also serves as liaison to the American Bar Association's task force on financial markets regulatory reform (2009 to present). Prior memberships include the house of delegates of the American Bar Association (2009-2011) and University of Virginia Law School's alumni council (2007-2010).
Mr Hockett joined Davis Polk as partner in 2008. He obtained his BA in government from the College of William & Mary in 1981, and his JD from the University of Virginia Law School in 1985.
