Biography: Arbitration

Colin Ong is the managing partner of Dr Colin Ong Legal Services and an active member of the Brunei and English bars. He has broad experiences in many areas of practice including banking; aviation; construction; corporate; cross-border litigation; energy law (including coal mining and coal supply matters); oil & gas (upstream and downstream disputes); IP & IT law; information technology; infrastructure projects; international trade; insurance; shipping disputes (including shipbuilding, charter parties etc); telecoms and technology transfer disputes.

He is frequently appointed as arbitrator or has been instructed as counsel by international law firms, foreign governments and leading multinationals in matters of Brunei, English, Indian, PRC and Singapore law matters. He has been instructed as lead counsel by many lawyers and energy companies to assist in complex arbitration cases.

Colin also has a very extensive experience as lead counsel or counsel in arbitration proceedings and is very active in eight countries in Asia and England. He has acted as counsel in some of the largest cases in Asia and has generally been retained to assist as co-lead counsel in many large commodity; construction and energy matters. He has recently been voted in research conducted by the Global Arbitration Review as one of the 45 leading international arbitration practitioners worldwide under the age of 45.

Asia Pacific Legal 500 (2009) has said he has a 'mastery of detail in commercial deals and is an outstanding and tactically lethal advocate'. IFLR 1000 (2009) said he 'has been described by the market as possessing a "complete mastery of the law" and "a brilliant commercial understanding of deals". IFLR 1000 (2010) describes him as 'recommended lawyer for arbitration,' Asialaw Profiles 2010 states that "...there are few of his standing in Southeast Asia'.

Colin is the first practising lawyer, being a non-head of state or senior judge from the 10 countries in South East Asia, and one of the youngest to have recently been appointed as a Master of the Bench of the Inner Temple in England.

He has conducted many large arbitrations as sole or co-arbitrator in arbitrations under ICC, UNCITRAL, LCIA, LMAA, BANI, CIETAC, KLRCA, SIAC and WIPO rules and has applied English, Indian, Indonesian, Malaysian, Hong Kong; PRC; Singapore and Thai law. Colin holds several legal qualifications including LLB (Sheffield); LLM; PhD in Law (Queen Mary, London); FAMINZ (Arb); FCIArb; FMIArb; FSIArb; DiplCArb. He is visiting professor of law or has been visiting professor at various universities including National University of Malaysia (UKM); National University of Singapore; University of Malaya; Kings College (London); and has been visiting fellow at Queen Mary College, University of London (since 1996).

He is the author of several legal texts including chapters in leading books on the subject of advocacy and cross-examination. He has published numerous articles in many leading law journals. Colin is on the editorial board of several international journals including Asian International Arbitration Journal; ABLR; Business Law International; Butterworths Journal of International Banking & Financial Law; Dispute Resolution International; and Maritime Risk International. Colin qualified as a barrister in England & Wales in 1991 and has been at Essex Court Chambers (London) since 1992 and a barrister at 3 Verulam Buildings (since 1996).

He is the president of the Arbitration Association Brunei Darussalam (statutory default appointing body); vice president of the London Court of International Arbitration (Asia-Pacific users' committee); a former vice chair of the arbitration committee of the IBA; vice president of APRAG; advisory councillor to the Indonesian National Board of Arbitration (BANI) and advisory committee member of the China-ASEAN Legal Research Center. He speaks and works in English, Chinese and Malay.
