Biography: Energy

Alexandre Calmon is a senior member of the infrastructure and natural resources group with Veirano Advogados. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Alexandre has practised natural resources law for over a decade with a strong focus on M&A transactions throughout Brazil and general corporate/commercial and regulatory matters in the energy sector.

In 2010-2011, among other relevant transactions, Alexandre coordinated as local external legal counsel for Maersk Oil the 100% acquisition of the Brazilian oil and gas assets of South Korean Corporation, a US$2.4 billion deal and one of the three largest deals ever made in the Brazilian oil and gas industry.

In his oil and gas practice Alexandre and his team advise oil and gas onshore and offshore Brazil asset acquisitions and divestments, share acquisitions and divestments involving local oil and gas companies, advising on concession contracts, product marketing, gas and crude purchase contracts, pipeline transportation matters, joint ventures and participation agreements, in addition to general administrative/regulatory matters with the Brazilian National Petroleum Agency – ANP and on general corporate/commercial, labour, tax, compliance and competition matters in connection with the local oil and gas industry.

Alexandre has strong international experience due to being a member of the global resources group of Macleod Dixon LLP, a major natural resources focused law firm with connections in Europe, Asia and South America, advising clients investing in the natural resources industry in South America.

Alexandre has also been recognised by Who's Who Legal, the independent research partner of the International Bar Association, as one of the world's leading energy lawyers in 2011. Alexandre is also listed as an leading practicioner for energy and natural resources law in Chambers Global: The World's Leading Lawyers since 2010, and in Chambers Global: South American Leading Lawyers since 2008.

Biography: Mining

Alexandre Calmon is a senior member in the infrastructure and natural resources group with Veirano Advogados. Based in Rio de Janeiro, Alexandre has practised natural resources law for over a decade with a strong focus on M&A transactions throughout Brazil, and general corporate/commercial matters in the mining and infrastructure sectors.

Prior to joining Veirano Advogados Alexandre held an in-house position as a trainee with Vale's legal department participating in various transactions regarding the consolidation of the Brazilian mining sector as conducted by Vale in the post privatisation era.

Alexandre consolidated its international experience when he joined the global resources group of Macleod Dixon LLP, a major Canadian natural resources focused law firm with strong connections in Europe, Asia and South America, advising foreign natural resources clients doing business in South America until joining Veirano Advogados late in 2006. Among other transactions conducted at that time, Alexandre advised one of the largest aluminum companies in the world evaluating opportunities and acquiring bauxite assets in the Co-operative Republic of Guyana.

In his mining practice, Alexandre and the team coordinated by him, advise on: mining asset acquisitions and divestments, share acquisitions and divestments involving local mining companies, partnership and option agreement, commodities marketing, transportation issues, formation of joint ventures, in addition to general administrative/regulatory matters with the Brazilian National Mining Agency – DNPM and on general corporate/commercial, labour, tax, compliance and competition matters in connection with the local mining industry.

On the governmental relations side, Alexandre is experienced in dealing with natural resources related to governmental agencies as well as environmental and tax authorities in Brazil.

Among other ongoing legal education and training initiatives, Alexandre has been an assistant professor for corporate law with the Law Department of the Saint Ursula Catholic Law School in Rio de Janeiro for three and a half years. He is also a co-author of the chapter on mining for Brazil in Getting the Deal Through.

Alexandre has been recognised by Who's Who Legal, the independent research partner of the International Bar Association, as one of the world's leading mining lawyers since 2009 and one of the world's leading energy lawyers in 2011.

Alexandre is fluent in Portuguese and English and has basic knowledge of French and Spanish.
