Biography: Mining

Pedro leads the infrastructure and natural resources national practice of Veirano based in both São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro offices. He returned to Veirano in 2009 after 20 years in the corporate world.

Pedro was general counsel for Vale, one of the world's top mining companies and among the largest business conglomerates in Latin America, for six years. He also held the positions of general counsel for Brasil Telecom SA, for three years after its privatisation and during the development of the new regulatory model in Brazil, and general counsel for Organizações Odebrecht for eight years, where he participated in several infrastructure projects within Brazil and in other parts of world. He was senior counsel at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Washington DC for six years, dealing mostly with project finance and corporate restructure. Pedro has substantial experience in all sides of infrastructure and natural resources projects, as a sponsor, financier, developer and contractor. He started his career with Veirano (then the Rio de Janeiro office of Baker & McKenzie), having practised in Chicago at the Baker & McKenzie headquarters in mergers and acquisitions and international trade.

Pedro is a board member of several organisations, including the mining committee of the International Bar Association, where he currently serves as a liaison officer. He was vice chairman of the Corporate Counsel Forum. He is also vice chairman and president of Instituto Innovare, a non-political organisation, dedicated to promoting a more speedy and efficient judiciary in Brazil. He is a board member of the Brazilian operations of a large Indian conglomerate in the sugar and ethanol business. In the beginning of 2011, Pedro was appointed as the honorary consul of India in the city of Rio de Janeiro working intensively to promote business between the two countries. He is a member of the infrastructure council of FIRJAN (Industries Federation in Rio de Janeiro), and a director of the Brazil-China Business Council.
