Biography: Environment

Alex leads the national environmental law group at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP and has been practising environmental law for over 20 years. Alex advises clients on all environmental legal issues, including contaminated land, regulatory compliance, renewable energy, climate change, emergency planning and response and defence of federal and provincial prosecutions. He has extensive experience in leading environmental due diligence on securities offerings, financings, mergers and acquisitions and has provided strategic advice in respect of major brownfield redevelopment projects and real estate transactions. Alex guides clients in responding to government policies and in the development of internal environmental practices and management systems. He provides counsel to energy, transportation and business sector clients in all aspects of resolution of environmental disputes including negotiation, mediation, arbitration and litigation.

Alex was appointed by the government of Alberta to the Alberta Environmental Appeals Board in 2006. He is a member of Canadian Centre for Environmental Arbitration and Mediation, CBA, American Bar Association, environment committee of Canadian Chamber of Commerce and advisory board of the Institute for Energy Law and Calgary Petroleum Club. He is past president of Canadian Transport Lawyers Association and Calgary Bar Association. He has lectured at University of Calgary Faculty of Law and the Schulich School of Engineering. He was admitted to Alberta Bar in 1986. Alex is a member of the boards of directors of Alberta Theatre Projects and the Calgary International Film Festival.
