Biography: Competition

Gian Luca Zampa is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group, based in Rome. His practice covers the whole range of merger control and contentious and non-contentious antitrust matters, both before the European Commission and the Italian Antitrust Authority (IAA) as well as the EU Courts and Italian tribunals.

His recent experience includes advising a freight forwarder undertaking in a cartel investigation before the IAA and its subsequent litigation; a large Russian gas supplier in a merger filing before the EU Commission; a chemical group in its challenge of a European Commission cartel decision before the European Court of Justice; a national trade association in a private enforcement article 101 TFEU case; an Italian energy company in a sector inquiry by the IAA on district heating; a leading media company in a sector inquiry by the Italian Communications Authority and a large Italian insurance company in a cross-border acquisition.

Gian Luca worked for three years at the IAA as an officer and case handler, dealing with broadcasting and transportation markets. Before joining Freshfields, he worked in Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz's antitrust department in New York. He has published a number of articles on competition law in Italian and European journals.

Gian Luca graduated in law (JD, magna cum laude) from the University of Bologna. He holds an LLM in Law from the University of London and from Columbia University Law School, New York. He is a member of the Italian bar and the New York bar.
