Biography: Shipping & Maritime

Mr L Chidi Ilogu graduated with an LLB (Hons) in 1974 from the University of Ife, was called to the Nigerian Bar in June 1975 and holds a Masters Degree (LLM) in Maritime Law from Cardiff Law School, University of Wales (1991). He is the principal counsel of Foundation Chambers, Lagos, Nigeria and has over 34 years' experience in legal practice. He is a consultant to the International Maritime Organization (IMO); member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK); supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association; and member of both the Nigerian Bar Association and the International Bar Association.

He lectured on Carriage of Goods by Sea at the Institute of Maritime Law, Lagos State University between 2001 and 2005. He served as chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association maritime law committee's section on business law between 2006 and 2010, and is currently third vice president of the Nigerian Maritime Law Association and a board member of the Maritime Arbitrators Association of Nigeria.

He is a frequent resource person at the National Seminar for Judges on Maritime Law organised bi-annually by the Nigerian Shippers' Council in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute. He is the author of Essays on Maritime Law and Practice and has published over 30 articles in local and international journals on shipping and maritime law. He consults for the major maritime parastatals in Nigeria on maritime policies, legislation and contentious matters, acts for P&I clubs and as retained solicitor to several shipping agencies and their overseas principals, logistic companies and a joint-venture port concession terminal operator. In 2009, he served on the transport schematic working group for the Vision 2020 committee set up by the federal government of Nigeria. In June 2010, he was the main IMO facilitator at a regional training and workshop on the legal implementation of the Ballast Water Management Convention with participants from 16 West and Central African States.
