In 1997 he attended a programme at the Japanese Institute of Invention and Innovation (JIII), in Tokyo, where he received a qualification in foreign investment and industrial property.
He is an active member of several organisations including the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), the Mexican Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AMPPI), American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), International Trademark Association (INTA), the Inter-American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI), International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI) and the Mexican Bar Association.
He began working at Uhthoff, Gomez Vega & Uhthoff, SC, in 1984 and was appointed as a partner in 1989. As a senior partner in the patent department at his current firm, he has advised an extensive variety of industries of Europe, North America, Asia and Latin America to protect different kinds of innovation.
Javier Uhthoff-Orive has established a leading international reputation for IP matters and patent matters and has been recognised as a leading light in IP practice. In 2008 he was awarded the 'Excellence in patent practice/litigation in private practice' award for Latin America and the Caribbean by the World Leaders International IP Awards.
