Mr Schaner is a vice chair of the arbitration committee of the IBA, a member of the ICC commission on arbitration, councillor of the North American users' council of the LCIA, chair of the USCIB Midwest arbitration committee, and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He speaks and writes regularly on arbitration and cross-border dispute resolution issues and is a member of the editorial boards of Dispute Resolution International and Revista de Arbitragem e Mediação. He is a member of the bars of the states of California and Illinois and many US federal courts including the Supreme Court.
Mr Schaner earned his JD from Stanford Law School and his AB (history), magna cum laude, from Duke University. Following law school, he clerked for the Hon Cecil F Poole, of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
