Biography: Competition

Alex Potter is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) practice group. He is a specialist in EC and UK competition law, and in coordinating the review of international cases. He is now on secondment to our office in Beijing, where he is driving our growth in this practice area in China. Alex's practice includes merger control, state aid law and competition enforcement actions brought by regulators. He has experience across a wide range of industries, including in particular in the consumer goods, retail and defence sectors.

Alex has handled numerous merger filings and behavioural investigations, including obtaining EC merger clearance for BAE Systems on its proposed joint venture with VT Group to consolidate the UK naval shipyards; representing Hanson on achieving EC merger clearance for its takeover by HeidelbergCement; advising Walkers Snacks, a division of PepsiCo, on the UK Office of Fair Trading's abuse of dominance enquiry into Walkers' rebate schemes and other trading terms; and various UK government departments on complex state aid matters.

He is a participant in the legal working groups of the International Chamber of Commerce and the EU Chamber of Commerce in China.

Alex studied at the University of Bristol, and speaks English and French.
