Tobias Klose is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer's antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group, based in Düsseldorf. He became a partner in 2003. He specialises in all aspects of European and German competition law with specific experience in the energy, natural resources, transport and chemicals sectors. He is co-chairman of the firm's chemicals sector group.
Tobias has recently focused on national and international cartel investigations advising clients inter alia in the paper and chemicals industries. His most recent cases include advising Bayer on the European Commission's investigations into cartels in the synthetic rubber and the chloroprene rubber businesses. Bayer achieved immunity in both investigations. Tobias has also acted in a number of high-profile merger cases before the German Federal Cartel Office and the European Commission, such as in the energy and natural resources industries. Only very recently, Tobias advised Norddeutsche Affinerie on its takeover of Belgian peer Cumerio, the merged entity creates Europe's largest copper producer. The Commission cleared the merger unconditionally following an in-depth phase II investigation.
Tobias studied law at the University of Goettingen and holds a PhD degree in European competition law from the Humboldt University in Berlin. He is a co-author of Brussels Commentary on EU Competition Law, writing on EU leniency. Furthermore he regularly contributes pieces on German procedural competition law to the Handbuch des Kartellrechts. Tobias is a non-governmental adviser to the Commission and was a Commission delegate at the 2007 ICN conference in Moscow.
Tobias joined Freshfields in 1998. He was seconded to the London office in 2001. Tobias speaks German, English and some Swedish.
