Biography: Mining

Howard Barrie is a specialist in the financing of mining developments on a project finance basis. Often acting for lenders, he has advised on the structuring, documenting and negotiating of these transactions in Spain, Canada, the US, Guinea, Mali, South Africa, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

Howard chairs the firm's Africa committee which is responsible for the development of its Africa practice and its relationship with its nine associate law firms in Algeria, Botswana, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. He has lectured on the project financing of mine development in Africa, the impact of the structure of different mining codes, solving legal issues arising in incorporating hedging into financings in the region and ensuring bankable project structures in francophone Africa.

Until a recent move to the firm's Paris office where he is responsible for the English law financing practice, Howard was head of project finance at Denton Wilde Sapte. In that capacity he advised commercial banks, export credit agencies, multilateral and other financial institutions, project sponsors, governments and other project participants on a wide variety of project financings and public-private partnership transactions. He contributed to and edited Public Private Partnerships BOT Techniques and Project Finance (Euromoney Books 2006) and has written and spoken widely on many aspects of project financings and PPPs.
