Biography: Competition Economists

Joseph Kalt is a senior economist with Compass Lexecon and is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Tucson, Arizona. He has provided expert testimony in numerous cases involving antitrust and regulatory issues across a wide range of industries. In addition, he is the Ford Foundation Professor of International Political Economy at the John F Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a specialist in the economics of development, political economy, industrial organisation, antitrust and regulation.

At Harvard, Professor Kalt is co-director of the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and a principal author of The State of the Native Nations. Since 1987, the Harvard Project has worked for and with tribes and tribal organisations, providing research, advisory services and education on issues of indigenous nation building.

At the Kennedy School, Professor Kalt served as academic dean for research, chair of degree programmes, chair of PhD programmes and chair of the economics and quantitative methods section. At present, he is a member of the board of trustees of the Communications Institute, the national advisory board of the Big Sky Institute and the board of directors of the Sonoran Institute. He served on the President's Commission on Aviation Safety and on the steering committee of the National Park Service's National Parks for the 21st Century.

Professor Kalt received his PhD (1980) and MA (1977) in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles, and his BA (1973) in Economics from Stanford University.
