Biography: Employee Benefits

Doug Hinson is the leader of Alston & Bird's ERISA litigation group, the area on which he focuses his practice. In addition, Mr Hinson has substantial experience and expertise in securities, as well as in complex commercial and insurance class action litigation.

The scope of Mr Hinson's practice covers the whole of the United States. For example, he has served as lead counsel in more than ten 401(k) and employer stock class actions, including matters pending in the districts of Oregon, New Jersey and Maryland, and separate Department of Labor investigations for these and other clients. In addition, Mr Hinson recently had a lead role in defending First Union in two highly publicised ERISA class actions filed in the Eastern District of Virginia, and he successfully defended Washington Group in a severance plan class action in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Mr Hinson also represented Delta Air Lines in a multi-district ERISA class action involving matters filed in Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Cincinnati, Albuquerque and East St Louis pertaining to the actuarial value of lump sums and alleged cutbacks in pension benefits for active and retired pilots.

Mr Hinson is on the editorial board of Class Action Law Monitor.

He received his JD, cum laude, from Georgetown University and his BA, magna cum laude, from Emory University.
