Martin J Elgison is the co-coordinator of Alston & Bird's seven intellectual property practice groups, and the leader of one of them: the intellectual property transactional group. He is also a member of the firm's intellectual property litigation group.
Mr Elgison uses his extensive experience in litigated and transactional intellectual property matters to counsel clients on intellectual property portfolio management, protection and enforcement strategies. He has served successfully as lead counsel in patent, trademark, copyright, trade dress, trade secret and false advertising litigation, as well as in disputed matters involving computer software and other technology. Mr Elgison has also assisted clients in negotiating and structuring complex transactions involving intellectual property rights, including information technology and software agreements, licence agreements, joint venture and joint development agreements, media broadcast and distribution agreements, sponsorship, marketing and promotional agreements, publishing transactions and web-based service agreements.
Mr Elgison writes and speaks frequently on intellectual property matters, including the creation and development of corporate IP programmes, and such diverse topics as protection of intellectual property in advertising, peer-to-peer file sharing, the use of meta tags and hyperlinks, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other matters involving intellectual property rights on the internet.
Mr Elgison received his JD, cum laude, in 1981, from the University of Miami School of Law, where he was a member of the law review.
