He has arbitrated and mediated cases involving entertainment, intellectual property, telecoms, construction, technology, employment, insurance, real estate, partnerships and law practice disputes.
Mr Chernick is the author or co-author of leading texts on commercial and employment dispute resolution and international arbitration and mediation; he is a frequent trainer and lecturer on arbitration and mediation topics.
He is former chair of the dispute resolution section of the American Bar Association and founding president of the College of Commercial Arbitrators. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a panellist on the Hong Kong International Arbitration Center, the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, the Center for Public Resources (CPR), the Chicago International Dispute Resolution Association (CIDRA) and the Beijing Arbitration Commission. Mr Chernick served as the ABA's adviser to the drafting committee for the Revised Uniform Arbitration Act.
Mr Chernick was a trial lawyer and partner of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher until 1994 (when he began his full-time neutral practice). As a trial lawyer he specialised in the arbitration of domestic and international disputes. He served as president of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles. He founded the California State Bar dispute resolution committee and was a leader in Dispute Resolution Services, the dispute resolution programme of the Los Angeles County Bar Association.
