Biography: Internet & e-Commerce

Steven De Schrijver is a partner in the Van Bael & Bellis Belgian business law group and heads its IT and data protection law practice.

Mr De Schrijver handles complex commercial agreements and projects dealing with new technologies (e-commerce, software licensing, website development and hosting, privacy law, technology transfers, digital signatures, IT-outsourcing, etc) on behalf of clients. For instance, he has coordinated several pan-European data protection compliance programmes. In addition, Mr De Schrijver advises Belgian and foreign companies, banks and investment funds on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, financing of acquisitions, private equity and venture capital. His work in the areas of corporate transactions has involved him in several national and cross-border transactions in the IT and telecoms sectors.

Steven De Schrijver was one of the editors of the 2nd edition of Van Bael & Bellis's Business Law Guide to Belgium (Kluwer Law International/Bruylant, 2003). He frequently publishes articles on selected topics relating to company law and IT law, and is a regular speaker at conferences. Furthermore, he is a member of the editorial board of Computerrecht, the only Dutch-language IT law magazine.

In addition, Steven De Schrijver is a member of the computer & telecommunications law commission of the Union Internationale des Avocats (UIA), a member of the IPIIT commission of the Association Internationale des Jeunes Avocats (AIJA) and the Belgian member of EuroITCounsel, a quality circle of independent IT lawyers. Mr De Schrijver is also actively involved in ITechLaw.

Born in Belgium, Steven De Schrijver received his JD (magna cum laude) from the University of Antwerp (Belgium) in 1992 and received an LLM from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1993. He is fluent in English, Dutch and French.
